Thank you!

A huge thank you to everyone who made suggestions and comments on our Safer Streets Commonplace map. We had over 1500 comments which we are using to explore more places where we can respond to the challenge of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on our streets. We are focusing on:

  • Pavement widening – to tackle physical distancing needs, promoting local high street use and supporting reopening businesses
  • Restricting through traffic on residential streets and creating low traffic neighbourhoods – to tackle rat running and safety issues, making streets safer and quieter and encouraging walking and cycling
  • Cycling improvements – to respond to the increase in people cycling locally
  • Healthy School Streets – to tackle the change in the way people are travelling and encourage walking, cycling and scooting over car use
  • Working with Partners – like Transport for London to jointly deliver cycle and pavement widening schemes
  • Using the information you have provided and working with local stakeholders we have been making a series of safety-based changes to streets in Camden in addition to completing a number of our existing schemes to benefit pedestrians and cyclists. Since the lockdown period started towards the end of March, this has included:

  • We have widened pavements at 6 busy locations to make it easier for pedestrians to keep apart from others while shopping and visiting local green spaces and NHS sites. This includes: Camden High Street, Chetwynd Rd, Hampstead High St, Kentish Town Rd, Kilburn High Rd, Millfield Lane and Well Walk
  • We have restricted through traffic on residential streets making them safer and quieter, by introducing a mixture of bollards and signage in 10 locations so far across Camden including Constantine Road, Savernake Road, Sandall Road, Wilmot Place, Clarence Way, Hartland Road and Red Lion Street.
  • We are improving existing cycle facilities like at Goods Way where we added bollards to separate cyclists from traffic. We are adding new pop up cycle lanes like at York Way and Prince of Wales Road, and providing new cycle storage locations and a network of dockless bike hire bay all across Camden.
  • We are continuing work on existing schemes – including completing four new cycle permeability schemes, providing new cut-throughs as well as exemptions for cycles on one-way streets to improve cycling access on Gaisford Street, Grove End/Chetwynd Road, Dartmouth Park Road/Grove Terrace and Mornington Terrace south
  • We are continuing to deliver transformational walking and cycling schemes like those at Camden Park Road, Brunswick Square and Tufnell Park junction and the West End Project. Where we can, we are fast tracking sschemes which are specifically delivering cycling and pedestrian improvements such as Gray’s Inn Road where construction will start this September.
  • This is just the start of the changes we are looking to make with more locations based on your suggestions being explored.

You can see the progress we are making on all these schemes on our map and if you have any comments or queries you can email us at safetravel@camden.gov.uk / call 020 7974 4444 .

Thank you for helping to make travel safer in Camden

Thank you for helping to make travel safer in Camden

Since early May we have been gathering suggestions from residents and stakeholders from across Camden, via our dedicated Commonplace map , on where we should be making changes to our streets. We have had over 1200 comments nominating places where we should be responding to the challenge of Coronavirus (COVID-19). In particular around making it easier for people to physically distance, improving cycling facilities and reducing rat running and speeding in residential streets.

Thank you to everyone who has made a suggestion already. We are reviewing every location that has been highlighted and are working on prioritising places where we can deliver the greatest benefit and are the most practical to implement, as well as those that can help key workers, such as staff at hospitals and other NHS sites.

We are already making changes based on comments made on the commonplace map. As part of the next phase of schemes we will be installing measures to make it safer for people to physically distance and walk and cycle on our streets at the following locations:

    Reducing through traffic

    Prowse Place

    Red Lion Street

    Dane Street

    Swains Lane

    Footway widening

    Chetwynd Road

    Millfield Lane

    Kentish Town Road

    Hampstead High Street

    Well Walk

You can find out more about these schemes and the many other changes we are making on our website https://www.camden.gov.uk/making-travel-safer-in-camden .

If you have not already made a suggestion on the Commonplace map and you would still like to do so, the map will be open for comments until midnight on 28th June. You can suggest a change on the map https://camdensafetravel.commonplace.is/ or contact us via safetravel@Camden.gov.uk / 020 7974 4444 .
